About the Faculty Senate

The Faculty Senate represents the Teaching Faculty of the University. Together with the Administration of the University, the Faculty Senate has responsibility for maintaining the academic standards of the University, improving the experience of working and studying at Northeastern, and making the procedural and academic functioning of the University as effective and harmonious as possible.

The Faculty Senate also serves to coordinate the activities of the various college faculties, as well as activities that involve both the administration and faculty of the University.

The Faculty Senate comprises forty members—thirty elected members and ten administrative members appointed by the President. The thirty elected members consist of tenured or tenure-track faculty members elected by and from the College faculties and the Law School faculty. A College’s representation in the Faculty Senate is proportional to the size of that College, subject only to the condition that all the Colleges and the Law School must have at least one representative.

For full details about the elections to and organization of the Faculty Senate, please refer to the Faculty Senate Bylaws.
